New material science and mechanical know-hows have helped automotive industry build better cars than ever. At the same time, cars are becoming more sophisticated and complex. Environmental concern, customer demand for luxury, and fuel efficiency requirement have pushed the complexity to a new high. All of these mean only one thing to the cost of car ownership: when car breaks down, the cost of repairing it can be astronomical!

Most new cars come with manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty, which usually includes any electric and mechanic components that drive the car, like engine, transmission, drive-shaft, and axles, and any parts under the hood that are not subject to normal wears, like tires, paint, battery, brake pads, wiper blades, hoses, and light bulb. New car warranty can last anywhere from 3-10 years, and from 36k-100k miles. When you shop for a pre-owned vehicle, check to see if there is still warranty left on the vehicle, and if the warranty is transferable from previous owner. Certified pre-owned vehicles usually come with warranty.

When you buy a pre-owned vehicle either from a dealer or an individual, there are many extended warranty programs to choose from to give you an extra peace of mind.

When shopping for car warranty, make sure you read the offering carefully to understand what is covered, what is not covered, deductibles and restrictions. Read the fine print as some warranty programs require the owner to log detailed routine maintenances and they may refuse to reimburse your repair cost if the log is lacking.

Ask a lot of questions. Does it offer roadside assistance and rental car program when the car is in the repair shop? Does the warranty reimburse the cost of repair work done by any certified car mechanics or it has to be certain repair shops on the list? What is your choice when comes to repair? What kind of auto part you can use? For some critical components, you want to insist on using genuine manufacturer's parts instead cheaper generic auto parts.

Do you have to pay the cost of repair up-front and have it reimbursed later? The paper work of making a claim can be a hassle. With some warranty program you can have your mechanic charge the cost right to the warranty provider's corporate credit card over the phone. Does it cover all the cost associated with the repair? That includes, parts, labor, environmental fees, and sales tax. Is there any limit on the number of claims you can make?

All the questions shall be answered in the warranty offering contract. Ask them for a copy of the contract before you buy. As with any contract, verbal promise does not mean much. You should ask them to write down any promise that is not in the pre-formatted contract.

Warranty cost also has a lot to do with make and model. Those cars built to last many years without repairs tend to have lower warranty cost. Japanese cars like Acura Integra/CL/MDX/RL, Honda Accord/Civic/Odyssey/CR-V, Infiniti G35, Isuzu Rodeo/Trooper, Lexus GX/LS, Mazda 626/Millenia, Mitsubishi Diamante/Galant, Nissan Altima/Maxima/Xterra, Suzuki Forenza, Toyota Corolla/Camry/Siena or German cars like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Saab, Volkswagen Beetle/Jetta/Passat/Touareg, Volvo tend to have better resale value and warranty can be less on average. But there are also some warranty companies who specialize in domestic cars like Buick LeSabre/Park Avenue/Century/Rivera, Cadillac Catera/DeVille/SeVille/Escalade, Chevrolet Truck/Camaro/Tahoe/Venture Van/Cavalier, Chrysler 300/Cirrus/Sebring/Pt Cruiser, Ford Explorer/Expedition/Escape/Excort/Taurus, GMC Truck/Suburban SUV, Hummer, Jaguar, Jeep Cherokee, Lincoln, Oldsmobile, Pontiac Grand AM/Bonneville. The reason they can do better is that they can find better after market part suppliers, and they can find plenty skilled mechanics to fix the car at lower cost, which means lower cost on the warranty program.

Unless the car is of late year model like 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, it would be difficult to find a warranty program. But for foreign cars known to last much longer, warranty for year model as old as 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1991, even 1990, can still be obtained at reasonable cost.

Be a smart warranty shopper and ask a lot of tough questions before you part your money. Use a warranty shopping matrix to weigh the pros and cons. You will be the one to decide which warranty program is best for you. When comes to extended warranty you have many options. Check out many resources on the internet, and shop around.

Search smart using the right terms. Here are common mis-spellings: car warantee, car waranty, car warrantee, woranty, worantee.
